Healthy Back-to-School Routines: Nutrition and Wellness Habits to Help Kids Thrive
Every August, social media is filled with back-to-school checklists. Buy the supplies. Organize the pantry. Label the backpacks. Adjust bedtimes. Meal prep. Declutter the closets.

Somewhere along the way, preparing for school can begin to feel like a race. But there isn't a trophy waiting for the mom who checks every box. And the stress of trying to keep up often steals the very peace we're hoping to create.

What if preparing for a new school year was more about creating a home where everyone feels nourished, rested, and ready for what lies ahead?

This month isn't about adding more to your list. It's about choosing one or two simple changes that will help your family feel healthier, calmer, and ready for the season ahead. Over the next week, simply choose one or two things to focus on. The best part is that you get to decide what will serve your family best.

Choose the one or two things that best fit your family. If simple breakfasts are already part of your rhythm, wonderful! Celebrate that win and choose another area where your family may need support.

It’s been a great summer! Your children have had summer freedom, family vacations, later bedtimes, more time to hang out with the family, and slower-paced mornings. With school starting at some point in August, the focus will shift to different rhythms of packed lunches, sports, after school activities, and increased exposure to new germs, which requires a little more of their growing bodies.

So instead of waiting until everyone comes home with "something" ... let's take a few simple steps now to help build their resilience.

These simple back-to-school wellness rhythms can help your family feel more prepared for the transition ahead.
Let's begin with four simple areas that create a strong foundation. Remember, you don't have to tackle all four this week.

Choose one that fits your family and build from there.

1. Building the Foundation for Healthy Back to School Rhythms

  • Prioritize sleep. Start adjusting bedtime in small increments before school begins. Even moving bedtime 5 to 10 minutes earlier each night can make the transition much smoother. One earlier bedtime this week is progress.
  • Serve protein-rich, nutrient-dense meals. Especially at breakfast and lunch, protein and healthy foods help support steady energy, balanced blood sugar, focus, and fuel little (and big!) bodies throughout the afternoon.
  • Refresh healthy hydration habits. Have everyone wash out their water bottles and encourage them to drink water throughout the day. Hydration plays an important role in supporting overall health.
  • Spend time outside every day. Daily sunshine and fresh air support healthy sleep, mood, movement, and overall wellness.
  • Keep some of the simple stretches you enjoyed in July. You may find that doing a few stretches in the morning works better than in the evenings. However, this is simply a suggestion and may be one of the rhythms you choose to add in a week or two.
Adding one of these free rhythms won't get as much attention as supplements, but they're some of the biggest contributors to a healthy immune system.

2. Support Gut Health Before School Begins
At least 70% of the immune system resides in the gut, which is one reason we always pay attention to digestive health.
For families, that may mean adding a quality probiotic before school starts.

Did you know there are foods that naturally support a healthy gut microbiome? Fiber-rich vegetables, whole grains, yogurt, kefir, and other fermented foods help nourish the beneficial bacteria that support overall wellness. Limiting sugar and processed foods is a great way to support everyone's digestive system.

A healthy gut won't prevent every illness. What you're aiming for is not perfection. You're simply giving yourself and your family a stronger foundation for the season ahead.

Simple Back to School Breakfast Idea
Stir shredded zucchini and carrots into Simple Truth Pumpkin Muffin Mix. Reduce the avocado oil and water slightly since the vegetables add moisture. Serve with scrambled eggs or chicken sausage for a protein-rich breakfast, fiber, and healthy carbohydrates to help everyone stay full and focused.

3. Nourishing Key Nutrients for Growing Bodies
Sometimes meals don't go exactly as planned. Life gets busy. Budgets get stretched. Kids become picky eaters. Give yourself grace. You're not trying to create perfection. You're simply trying to build a stronger foundation over time.
Your budget may be such that buying organic isn't possible. Remember, it's okay.

Check out last month's blog, "Healthy Back-to-School Routines: Simple Wellness Habits That Create a Calm Home," for ideas on easing the grocery budget while focusing on one or two areas you can adjust, such as reducing sugar before school starts and including healthy fats and protein to support brain function.

If you have a picky eater and still want to support your children's wellness, consider Immugummies and Mighty Pro by Young Living. Both are designed to taste like a treat for children. Immugummies are a daily chewable gummy that my family enjoys as part of our wellness routine. Another idea is KidScents Mighty Pro, which is designed to support digestive health and overall wellness. Pssst ... it tastes like a pixie stick!

If you want to kick it up a notch, you could add a goji berry puree packet to their lunch. Its official name is NingXia Red, but my grandchildren call it "Diddy juice," and it has become part of our family's routine. I've noticed more consistent energy, better sleep, and it's something I enjoy every day. My daughters have shared that they appreciate having this additional support as their children head into the school year.

4. Prepare Your Natural Wellness Cabinet Before Anyone Gets Sick

One thing you've probably learned over the years...
We've all had that moment. A child wakes up with a fever, a sore throat, or a cough, and suddenly you're searching your wellness cabinet or wondering what store is still open.

Preparing ahead isn't about expecting illness. It's about giving yourself one less thing to worry about if it happens.

Since school is starting at some point in August, what if you add one item to your wellness cabinet each time you go to the grocery store or place an online order?

Giving yourself peace of mind is highly underrated.

Illness is a normal part of childhood. The reality is children will pick up something. A goal you may want to put in place is to help support healthy immune systems so everybody can respond well, recover well, and thrive over the long term.

There's a big difference between expecting your child never to get sick and helping their body be ready when they do.
Remember, life is more than a checklist. Sometimes the sweetest interruptions are the moments we remember most when we are fully present with our families and loved ones.
