Can you believe July is almost behind us?
Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about creating simple summer rhythms, making our homes more peaceful, and learning to rest well so we can lead our families well. My hope is that you’ve discovered you don’t have to change everything at once. Lasting change often begins with one small rhythm practiced consistently.
Now, as August approaches, many families naturally begin thinking about school schedules, earlier bedtimes, sports, and busier calendars. It’s easy to slip back into rushing from one thing to the next. But what if this year felt different? What if, instead of hurrying into another busy season, you carried these peaceful rhythms with you?
As we prepare for the beginning of a new school year, let’s look at a few simple wellness rhythms that can help your family step into fall feeling calmer, healthier, and better prepared for the months ahead.
Start Your Day with Connection and Movement
First, continue sitting on your porch in the evening and checking in with everyone’s highs and lows from the day. Those simple moments of connection are the rhythms your children will remember.
If evenings become too busy once fall schedules begin, consider switching it up and gathering together in the morning instead. You could meet on the porch or back patio for a few simple stretches before everyone begins their day.
One of the benefits of being outside in the morning is allowing your eyes to see the natural morning light. Morning light helps support your circadian rhythm, which plays an important role in healthy sleep patterns.
Take a few deep breaths and do some simple movements that get your whole body involved and awake. It doesn’t have to be complicated. A few minutes of movement and connection can set a peaceful tone for the day ahead.
Support Your Family Through Simple Wellness Swaps
Throughout this series, we’ve talked about how small rhythms create a calmer home. We’ve looked at creating margin, building peaceful spaces, and resting well so you can lead well.
Now, let’s look at a few other ideas that can support your family’s wellness as you prepare for the fall season.
There are simple food swaps you can make that support healthier habits for your family. For example, in the kitchen, consider swapping out traditional table salt for mineral-rich options like Redmond Real Salt or Celtic Sea Salt. Try buying organic produce when it’s in season for better prices and purchase protein when it’s on sale.
To make grocery shopping easier, save a picture of the “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” foods on your phone. It can be a helpful guide when deciding which foods to prioritize buying organically.
Over the last few months, I’ve noticed many small, company-owned brands I used to purchase have been bought out by larger corporations. As a small business owner, I love supporting other small businesses, so this has been disappointing to see.
The reason I mention this is because when larger companies purchase smaller food brands, ingredients can sometimes change. If your goal is to remove unnecessary ingredients, support gut health, or simply eat a cleaner diet, it’s important to continue reading labels.
However, keeping up with every ingredient change can feel like a full-time job! For personal care products, I love using the EWG app as a guide, and for groceries, the Yuka app can be a helpful tool when making choices for your family.
Reducing unnecessary toxins from the foods and products you bring into your home is one simple way to support your family’s overall wellness.
Create a Natural Outdoor Swap
Wellness changes don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes one small swap is the beginning of a new rhythm.
One example is creating your own outdoor spray instead of reaching for products with ingredients you may not want on your family’s skin. This simple “Bug Off” spray smells amazing and is a natural alternative for enjoying summer evenings outdoors.
Before you run to a big box store or order essential oils online, I want to share something I’ve learned over the years: essential oils are not all created equal.
The quality of an essential oil depends on many factors, including how the plants are grown, harvested, distilled, and tested. When we are intentional about reducing unnecessary ingredients in our homes, it makes sense to also be thoughtful about the products we use on and around our families.
When purchasing essential oils, look for companies that are transparent about their sourcing and testing practices. One of the reasons I have chosen Young Living for the past 12 years is because of their Seed to Seal® commitment. Knowing that there are standards around growing, harvesting, testing, and producing the oils I use gives me confidence when using them with my family.
This is one of the wellness choices that has become part of our family’s everyday rhythms.
If you have questions about essential oils or want to learn more about why I personally chose Young Living, I would love to help.

Fill ⅓ of the bottle with witch hazel and the rest with water.
Spray every two hours while outside.
Add a Simple Nourishing Snack
Another simple wellness rhythm is creating a healthier snack option for your family after school.
A protein smoothie can be a great way to support your family with nourishing ingredients. Protein powders may not fit everyone’s budget, and that’s okay. You can add organic coconut yogurt, nut butters, chia seeds, flax seeds, or hemp hearts instead.
If your family is dairy-free, you can use an organic alternative milk. Buying organic frozen fruit is also a simple and affordable way to create delicious smoothies. Two or three fruits are plenty.
One of my favorite tricks is adding ¼ to ½ of an avocado. You won’t taste it, and it creates a delicious creamy texture.
Making a healthier drink for your family once or twice a week is a simple rhythm that supports your family’s wellness and gives everyone a nourishing option when they walk through the door after a busy day.
Start Small
As you prepare your family for fall, remember you do not need to change everything at once.
Gentle stretching.
Making an outdoor swap instead of buying a traditional bug spray.
Creating one healthier snack.
Choosing a cleaner product for your home.
These are all small steps that can create lasting wellness rhythms.
When you look at these suggestions, choose just one and see how it feels to add it to your routine. If it doesn’t work for your family, that’s okay. Choose another one.
Wellness is not about perfection. It’s about finding the simple rhythms that work for your family’s season of life.
